CEO Game Plan Part II - Steps to Success

Should the CEO perform Business Functions or Find leaders to Perform these? When the CEO performs Business functions the organization is constrained by hi capacity because:
  • It keeps him away from doing other important things

  • Others will refrain from doing what the CEO is doing for fear of upstaging him or competing

  • Whatever the CEO does is perceived by others as right and so others fail to think critically about what the CEO does. This leads to undesirable effects in that area of business and other ventures it affects.

Three steps to resolve this and the easiest means of Success are - To Develop Operating Leaders and to

  • Be clear about what the CEO wants done and be sure that the entire team comprehends the task.

  • Provide the resources required for success.

  • Make it worth their while to succeed.

The key to success lies in providing the ingredients and ongoing support to the Operating Leaders. Open feedback and regular interaction with the leaders will help enhance the performance of the organization. The next generation of leaders needs to be nurtured with care. The CEO needs to build a team of complimentary but different skills, views and orientation to provide a rich environment of diverse thinking. Finally the CEO should always look for high-stakeopportunities to personally pave the path to success and be a leader himself for others to respect and follow!
